How Primal Bee supers, nest frames, and hive bodies work with Langstroth equipment and other systems.
Primal Bee medium and deep supers are built to standard Langstroth internal dimensions, so they accept regular wooden honey frames from any supplier. The nest box and nest frames, however, are a proprietary oversized format engineered as part of an integrated thermodynamic system — they are not interchangeable with standard Langstroth boxes, and that's by design. The nest frame geometry is one of the Three Pillars behind Primal Bee's thermal performance.
Many beekeepers successfully run Primal Bee hives alongside traditional Langstroth hives in the same apiary.
Super and frame compatibility
Standard Langstroth dimensions in supers — Primal Bee medium and deep supers match standard Langstroth sizing and accept regular wooden frames from any supplier. Same extractor, same smoker, same harvest workflow.
Flow Hive frames — Not directly compatible. Compatibility with non-standard frame systems is on the beekeeper to verify; we can't guarantee fit or function with Flow Hive frames.
Honey harvesting — Honey is collected from the supers above the nest box using regular Langstroth frames and standard extraction methods (uncapping and spinning).
Nest frames — Purpose-built for brood rearing in the Primal Bee system. Different size and shape by design — that's what enables the thermal performance.

Hive body dimensions
Primal Bee hive body — 15.7″ wide × 23.4″ long, between standard 8-frame and 10-frame Langstroth widths
Standard 10-frame Langstroth boxes will not fit directly on top of the Primal Bee hive — the dimensions don't match
A full deep super of honey typically weighs approximately 29–30 lb (13–14 kg)
Important: The Primal Bee nest frame geometry, insulation, and hive body design work together as one integrated thermodynamic system — the Three Pillars in action. Using nest frames alone in a custom box would lose the core performance benefits, because the geometry only works in concert with the engineered EPS shell and the adiabatic seal.
Compatibility with Langstroth and other hive systems
Langstroth hives — Primal Bee hives run independently alongside standard Langstroth hives in the same apiary. Bees return to their own hive; you can transition operations gradually or run side-by-side comparisons without conflict.
National (British Standard) — The Primal Bee system is not currently available in National frame configuration. It's designed around Langstroth-standard dimensions only.
Tip: If you're outside the continental U.S. or have a non-standard setup, reach out to discuss how Primal Bee might work for you. Dr. Jason Graham, PhD, also runs complimentary weekly remote video office hours (Mon 10am PDT / Wed 2pm PDT via Google Meet) for these kinds of conversations.
FAQ
Can I use Flow frames in your supers?
Flow Hive frames are not directly compatible with Primal Bee. Our medium and deep supers are standard Langstroth dimensions and accept regular honey frames, but compatibility with non-standard frame systems is on the beekeeper to verify — we can't guarantee Flow frames will fit or function correctly. Feel free to ask and we can provide dimensional reference information to help you check.
Are your medium and deep supers standard sizes?
Yes. Our supers are standard medium and deep Langstroth internal dimensions, compatible with regular wooden honey frames from any supplier. Same extractor, same harvest workflow.
Do regular honey frames fit in your supers?
Yes. Standard medium or deep wooden frames from any supplier fit in our supers.
Can I run Primal Bee hives alongside standard Langstroth hives in the same apiary?
Yes, absolutely. The two systems operate independently — bees forage and return to their own hive regardless of what neighboring hives look like. Many beekeepers run Primal Bee and Langstroth hives side by side while transitioning their operation or testing performance comparisons.
Is the Primal Bee hive available in National (British Standard) frame configuration?
Not currently. The Primal Bee hive system is designed around Langstroth-standard dimensions and isn't available in National (British Standard) configuration. Our supers accept any standard Langstroth medium or deep frame, and the nest frames are a proprietary oversized format specific to the Primal Bee system. If you're located outside the continental U.S., let us know — we're happy to discuss your setup.
Will a standard 10-frame Langstroth box fit on top of the Primal Bee hive?
No. A standard 10-frame Langstroth box will not fit directly on top of the Primal Bee hive — the Primal Bee hive has its own dimensions (15.7″ wide × 23.4″ long), which differ from a standard 10-frame box. However, Primal Bee's own medium and deep supers are standard internal dimensions and accept standard Langstroth frames — so your existing frames will work in our supers. Feel free to ask if you have specific compatibility questions and we can provide detailed dimensional references.
Do Primal Bee nest frames allow for direct honey harvesting?
Primal Bee nest frames are designed specifically for brood rearing, not direct honey harvesting. Honey is collected from the standard-sized medium or deep supers that sit above the nest box, using regular Langstroth frames and standard extraction methods (uncapping and spinning). If you're looking for a flow-style harvest-from-the-frame approach, our system doesn't natively support that — feel free to reach out and we can discuss your setup.
Can I use Primal Bee nest frames in a custom-built hive body?
We don't recommend it. Primal Bee proprietary nest frames are engineered to work as part of an integrated thermodynamic system — the frame geometry, EPS insulation, and hive body design (the Three Pillars) all work together to deliver the performance benefits. Using the frames alone in a custom box would lose the core thermodynamic advantages that make the system effective. For that reason, Primal Bee generally doesn't sell frames as a standalone product for use in third-party hive bodies. Reach out if you'd like to discuss your specific setup.
How much does a full deep super weigh?
A deep super full of honey typically weighs approximately 29–30 lb (13–14 kg).
