How to install, troubleshoot, and replace foundations in Primal Bee nest frames.
Primal Bee nest frames work with both proprietary plastic foundations and traditional wax-and-wire foundations. The frames themselves are an oversized format engineered as Pillar 2 of Primal Bee's thermal performance — the vertical architecture and continuous brood-frame geometry that produces stable convection currents and uninterrupted queen laying. A small gap between the frame and foundation is normal and by design. If a foundation won't snap into place, a simple change in installation order usually fixes it — and if it's a true misfit, we'll replace it at no charge.

Installing foundation in Primal Bee frames
Plastic foundation — snap it into the built-in connection points on the frame
Wax and wire foundation — use the pre-drilled holes and pegs along the frame edges to facilitate wiring
Installation order — always connect the bottom two pegs first, then the top two, to prevent the frame from racking
Tip: Video tutorials on the Primal Bee YouTube channel walk through different methods for installing wax and wire foundation.
Troubleshooting foundation fit
A small gap between the frame and foundation is intentional — it's not a defect. The only real problem is when a foundation is so oversized that the connection points won't engage at all.
If your foundation won't snap in:
Install the bottom two peg connections first, then the top two.
Apply firm pressure or gentle twisting to seat the snap points.
If still too tight, carefully drill out the holes slightly to ease the fit.
If none of these steps work, contact us with a photo of the full frame and foundation together.
Important: If the foundation is confirmed as a true misfit, we'll send a replacement at no charge.
Using wax foundations
We don't sell wax foundations directly, but any standard-size wax foundation works with Primal Bee nest frames. Reach out anytime for guidance and best practices.
FAQ
Can I use wire and wax foundation instead of plastic in Primal Bee frames?
Yes. Primal Bee nest frames include holes and pegs along the edges to facilitate wiring. Video tutorials on the Primal Bee YouTube channel show different methods for installing wax and wire foundation. See Foundations and wiring for the wiring approach in detail.
Is it normal to have a small gap between the frame and the foundation?
Yes — a small gap between the frame and the foundation is intentional and completely normal. It's not a defect. The only issue is when a foundation is so oversized that it can't snap into the frame at all, with the connection points failing to engage even under pressure. If that happens, contact us and we'll make it right.
What should I do if my foundation is too large to snap into the frame?
If the foundation corners are slightly too large and the snap points won't engage even with firm pressure or gentle twisting, share a photo of the full frame and foundation together so we can assess the fit. If it's confirmed as a true misfit, we'll replace it at no charge.
My foundation won't snap into the connection points — what should I do?
Try installing the bottom two pegs first, then the top two. This sequence usually prevents the frame from racking and makes alignment much easier. If it's still too tight, you can carefully drill out the holes slightly to ease the fit. If these steps don't resolve the issue, contact us and we'll explore additional solutions.
How do I prevent the frame from racking during installation?
Install the bottom two peg connections first, then the top two. This prevents the frame body from racking and makes alignment much easier.
How do I get a replacement for a foundation that doesn't fit?
Share photos of the entire frame and foundation together with us. We'll review them and, if the foundation is confirmed as oversized, we'll send a replacement at no charge.
Do you sell or provide wax foundations?
We don't sell wax foundations directly, but any standard-size wax foundation can be used with Primal Bee nest frames. We're happy to share guidance and best practices — feel free to ask if you have any questions.
